If you are in Canada, I'm sorry to say, but yes.

I've also been looking into starting a small home based soap / body care business. One that I just sell at craft shows and through word of mouth for the first few years. My biggest concern is if someone uses my product, and for some reason has a bad reaction to it and then decides to sue me. It looks like the only kind of insurance one can get for this would be a commercial policy which would runs from $800-$1000 annually!

Does anyone know a less expensive option? Are there any organizations or associations in Canada or Ontario that one can join and get a lower insurance rate?
Rowena Very Happy

Hi Rowena,
If you find cheaper insurance I would love to know. As for me I have started a business small scale so far....soaps and notions in a new consignment store & word of mouth so far. Off to a slow start. Hoping to redo our garage for a shop. Like you, I need to find a reasonable insurance in Canada. Cheers.....Brenda

What about AARP?
I have RLI now, but I don't know if it's available in Canada.

Hello Irene,
I was looking at your site. Very nice... Do you also have a home store as well? If so which seems to get the majority of sales? Online or store sales? Also I noticed those cute little soap bathtubs you have. May I ask where you purchased them? They are so cute!!!!

Thanks!
I only have an online store right now. I did have an actual store in a small strip mall. It was bought out and my rent doubled. So I closed it.

I collect bathtub soap dishes. I must have hundreds of them by now. Laughing

Thanks Irene. I've thought about going online. I just wondered if it made a difference in the bottom line, (money) or not. Very Happy

I do a few farmer's markets and fairs and that helps getting the word out about my products.

I have my stuff in an artisan consignment store and the owner wants to do the local home show for exsposure. I want to do samples and draw baskets as well as display for sale items. Hopefully this will help both of us. Every little bit helps. Wink

Hello;
I was just going through the past discussion regarding Insurance for a soap business. Did any of you fellow Canadians find reasonable insurance?

Thanx,
Carrie

Colleen at Enfleurage Organics is working with a couple of insurance agents, trying to put together an affordable group policy for soapers. You can check out her progress here......
