The jury refused to choose the best film

In a world where unemployment is a natural consequence of the economic system, in a world of exploitation and disenfranchisement of workers, director Vittorio de Sica in his film "Bicycle Thieves" does not find a way out for his hero. He forces him to get lost in the crowd of the same destitute, the same unhappy people. But still, the film is not pessimistic. He is strong with his love for the common man, faith in his kindness, honor, diligence. When a disgraced, beaten, tired and hopeless man wanders aimlessly and aimlessly through the noisy street of an indifferent city, his son's little hand finds his hand. This is the handshake of future generations. The author of the film put his hope for humanity, his faith in the future into it...

But it was not this wonderful film that won the championship either.

Then, perhaps, not having decided to confirm the primacy of the Battleship Potemkin, the young directors suggested other Soviet films — Pudovkin's "Mother" or Dovzhenko's "Earth"?

"Mother", released in 1926, together with "Battleship "Potemkin" went the way of fame on the screens of the whole world. The revolutionary truth, the imaginative cinematic language of the film, dynamic editing — all this makes "Mother" an unforgettable, folk work.

The same can be said about the "Earth". One of the first Soviet paintings about collectivization — it was staged in the midst of events, in 1930. The high ability to take the most relevant topics of our time and solve them on a large scale, broadly, philosophically and generically, characteristic of the entire work of Alexander Dovzhenko, manifested itself in the "Earth" with special poetic force. The images of a new life winning, despite the fierce resistance of the old one, amaze with their poetic elation and vital truth.

The power of these silent Soviet paintings has not dried up over the years. They still excite the senses, still excite the minds. But they were not given the palm either. Which film was chosen by the jury of the second round?

None.

The jury refused to single out one of the twelve best films, the best. And we must agree with this decision. Too many criteria can be applied, too many demands can be made, too many qualities can be checked.

Instead of one, the best film, the jury chose six of the best out of twelve and decided to publish them in different languages in alphabetical order. That's what we'll do:

1. "Battleship "Potemkin",
2. "The Great Illusion",
3. "Gold rush",
4. "Mother",
5. "Bicycle Thieves",
6. "The Passion of Jeanne d'Ark".

Alphabetical lists, as you know, are used when you need to make a list of equals, when no one is given preference. However, I am pleased that the Battleship Potemkin was again in the first place in this list. By the way, in the French list, in the language of the organizers of the competition — "Battleship "Potemkin" was also the first!.. But this is, of course, a joke.

So, the question of the best film of all time remained, strictly speaking, without a categorical answer. Does this mean that the competition organized by the Brussels World Exhibition and the Belgian Cinematics did not yield any results?

No, in my opinion, the significance of this competition was very great. He drew the attention of a wide international community to the history of the youngest and at the same time the most popular of the arts — cinema. He drew attention to the best works of cinematography of all times and peoples, once again showing that cinema has already created its classics and that our Soviet masters played a prominent role in this glorious historical cause.
